THE ROAD TO RUSSIA2014

Skeleton

Skeleton Background:

A sport inspired by Cresta where crazy men try and navigate their way down an icy shoot. Skeleton is a modernized version, as athletes lay down face first kissing the ice with arms back, eyes peeled approaching and exceeding speeds of 140kph! These athletes manipulate their way down the track through body movements and occasionally the dragging of toes while laying on a glorified lunch tray. This lunch tray, also know as the "Skeleton", weighs up to 95lbs and houses two steel, round, runners which allow the athlete to skid and slide in ways you imagined as a child.

While the sport of Skeleton can be traced way back to 1882, it only first made it's appearance in the 1928 Olympic Games and again in 1948 before taking almost a 60 year hiatus. The 2002 Park City Olympics marked Skeleton's return to the Games and has been a major part of the Event ever since.
